The Basics of Video Compression

Why Do We Compress the video?

  • An uncompressed 1080p file requires about 237 MB/second for playback.  
    • It is far exceeding any internal connection speed mere mortals can afford.  
    • Most compressed movies playback from the web at less than 1.5 MB/s
  • The higher the quality of the source file, the higher the potential quality of the compressed files derived from it.
    • You can't make a compressed file look better than the source file; with the possible exception of making the frame size smaller.
  • When compressing a file, you apply settings to determine what you want the source file to become.
    • The size and format of the source file have almost no relevance.
    • all compression software automatically determines the specs of the source file and creates the transcoded file based on your settings.

Definitions

Codec (Compressor/Decompressor)
The mathematics used to convert light and sound into numbers that can be stored and played back from a computer.  Codecs are the heart and soul of compression.  There is no single codec that is perfect for capture, editing, and distribution.

Bit rate
The speed, in bits per seconds (bps), of a media file during playback.  Controlling bit rate is a key element of compression.  Also called data rate or bandwidth.  This also determines how smoothly a web video will stream.
Our Goal, when creating videos for the web, is to get the highest possible image quality from the smallest possible bit rate.

Frame size
The size, in pixels, of a video frame

Frame rate
The number of frames playing per second; the web supports an infinite variety of frame rates.

Artifacts
Small, ugly, rectangular blocks in compressed video caused by bit rates that are set too low.

I-frame
A method of compression where each frame is compressed individually.  Yield excellent image quality, with very large file sizes.  Best format for editing.

GOP (Group of Pictures)
A method of compression where groups of frames are compressed together.  Yields good image quality with very small file sizes. Best for web videos.

What Determines Quality?

  • Image quality is balance of five factors:
    • Codec.  Different codecs require different settings for similar quality.
    • Compressed frame size.  Larger frame sizes require faster bit rates
    • Compress frame rate.  Faster frame rates require faster bit rates.
    • Movement between frames.  More movement between frames requires faster bit rates
    • Bit fate of the compressed file.  Higher bit rates yield higher quality, but much larger file sizes.

Bit Rate Isn't Everything

  • Files encoded at the same bit rate will generally have the same file size, but they may not have the same image quality, unless they also have the same specifications.

Frame Size Makes a Difference

  • Bit rates that work for one format, don't work for others.
  • NTSC DV frame contains 345,600 pixels
  • PAL DV frame contains 414,720 pixels
  • 720p frame contains 921,600 pixels
  • 1080p frame contains 2,073,600 pixels
  • 2K frame contains about 2.21 million pixels
  • 4D frame contains about 8.29 million pixels

Minimize Movement

  • Video compression yields the smallest file sizes when there is very little movement between frames.
    • The more movement between frames in the master file - from camera, transitions, effects, or talent - the higher the bit rate that is needed to properly compress it.
  • If small file sizes are key, minimize on-screen movement; such as hand-held cameras, file noise effects, video noise due to low light, or leaves waving in the background behind your actors.

  • Know your audience: Learn what your audience struggles with and what they want to know more about and use it to inform your script. Set context around your video by mentioning clear prerequisites.
  • Keep it concise: Cut the fluff from your videos to keep the length manageable, and break down long content into digestible chunks so that viewers can self-navigate.
  • Planning matters: Spec out your video specifically for the online format, and prepare a script before shooting.
  • Quality is essential: You don't have to spend thousands of dollars on equipment, but good audio and a decent lo-fi studio setup with a backdrop can make your production feel much more professional.
  • Look at metrics that tie to your goals: Specific measurements like student projects can speak to the effectiveness of your teaching on an entirely different level than general analytics.
  • Good supplementary content: Supplementary materials, like quizzes, transcripts, ebooks, and PDFs, can be a differentiator for your course and help tailor to different learning styles.
  • Passionate instructors: Put someone who's actually an expert on screen, rather than hiring an actor.

SD Video Workflow with FCP

I have captured a lot of SD Videos from my camcorder with Premiere Pro 2 long long time ago but didn't have the time to work on them.  I have exported them in AVI format and saved them on the Windows Home Server for years.

It is time to do something about it.
  • I copied the avi files to my MacBook Pro external hard disk.  Import them into FCP 6.5.
  • View the videos one by one to add the log notes about each clip
  • Create a sequence for an event and drop the related clips in the sequence and edit the sequence, if needed
  • Export the sequence to QuickTime movie (it is hugh, for a 14-minute video, it is 3.18 GB)
  • Use Freemake Video Converter to convert it to MP4 video (and the result is pretty good and it is about 200MB from the 3GB one)
Issues:
  • When I imported the AVI files into FCP, I got a warning saying these files are not optimized to FCP.  (I should convert all the clips to Apple ProRes 422 if I am going to do a lot of editing)
  • I tried to export the video directly from FCP to Compressor with different format but the results are NOT good.
Questions:
  • What is the setting I should use in Compressor?
  • Apple, Format, QuickTime, QuickTime H.264, Key Frames Automatic
  • Should I do anything before I import the clips into FCP?

Resolution = Sharpness
  • Film (2K) has 9 times more resolution than NTSC
  • HD 1080p

Latitude = Shades
  • Film (16) vs HD-DSLR (11) vs NTSC (8) stops of light

Frame Rate
  • 24p = Cinematic
  • 60p = Slow Motion
  • 30p = TV / News
ISO
Stills should always use Whole ISOs
  • 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200
Video
  • 160, 320, 640, 1250 (highlight clipping, but low shadow noise)
  • Bad = 125, 250, 500, 1000 (lots of shadow noise)
  • Do not enable Highlight Tone Priority (7D and T2i)
Aperture of F-stop
  • 1.4, 2, 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8, 11,16,  22
Shutter Speed
180 degree shutter rule

Production Techniques
Neutral Density (ND) Fader (when the light is way too bright)
  • Reduces 2 to 8 stops of light
External Mic (Rode VideoMic)
  • Beware of Audio Gain Control (AGC) hiss when audio is low
  • Use a dead cat when outside to cut down on wind noise
Holding the Camera
  • Keep elbow tucked, two hands
  • Use support from a wall or table
  • Try to get 3 points of contact for a stable shot 
  • Pan from the waist
  • Watch your wrist!  The pivot point is exactly at your sensor so it’s shaky.
  • Use a tripod whenever possible
Manual Focus / No Zooming
  • Keep a constant distance between camera and subject (Track their steps and pace)
  • Your DOF determines your wiggle room
  • Don’t go below a 2.8 f-stop

  • if it is too much light for shallow depth of field with the above shutter speed, try to lower the ISO and use neutral-density filters

Data Rate

very important concept about the size and quality of a video file...

  • for HD, use 10Mbs
  • for SD, 1Mbs should be enough
  • 2000 kbps (SD), 5000 kbps (HD)
